Kisah dalam film ini terjadi setahun setelah peristiwa-peristiwa yang diceritakan dalam Batman Begins, Batman alias Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale), Letnan Gordon James (Gary Oldman), dan Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) sang Jaksa Wilayah yang baru, berhasil mengurangi angka kejahatan yang mencemari kedamaian Gotham City. Namun seorang penjahat misterius yang dikenal sebagai Joker (almarhum Heath Ledger) muncul di Gotham, menyebabkan berbagai kekacauan. Pertarungan antara Batman dan Joker menjadi sangat personal, membuat keyakinan si manusia kelelawar teruji, dan ia harus terus meningkatkan teknologi persenjataannya untuk menghentikan Joker. Set within a year after the events of Batman Begins, Batman / Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale), Lieutenant James Gordon (Gary Oldman), and new district attorney Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) successfully begin to round up the criminals that plague Gotham City until a mysterious criminal mastermind known only as the Joker (the late Heath Ledger) appears in Gotham, creating a new wave of chaos. Batman's struggle against the Joker becomes deeply personal, forcing him to confront everything he believes in and improve his technology to stop him. Meanwhile, a love triangle develops between Bruce Wayne, Dent and Rachel Dawes (Maggie Gyllenhaal)
